Park district planning best uses of new property
A small group of community members braved the rain to meet with staff and a board member of the Central Plumas Recreation and Park District last Tuesday to help plan the district’s future.
Thanks to two recent acquisitions, the park district has more than doubled the size of Pioneer Park in East Quincy, and officials are ready to hear ideas from the public about how to use the land.
The first acquisition is a 3-acre parcel that runs north-south from Pioneer RV Park to Highway 70 and east-west from the Caltrans maintenance yard to Pioneer Park.
The second acquisition is 1 acre and includes the old Forest Service scaling station. This parcel has legal ingress and egress onto Highway 70, which the first parcel lacks.
The district paid $95,000 to Ralph Wittick for the first parcel and received the second as a donation from the National Park Service.
The latest: The district has developed a list of 10 criteria for evaluating possible uses of the land. It has also solicited ideas from the public, which include: community recreation center, multi-use turf area, soccer fields, developed camping, outdoor basketball courts, fitness track, batting cages, horse arena, bicycle track, community garden and an extension of existing park amenities.
What’s next: A subcommittee will rank the proposed uses according to the 10 criteria and hone the list to the top five or six scorers. That list will be the subject of a public meeting Saturday, April 2, 10 a.m. – noon, at the library in Quincy.
After that: The district plans to further pare the list to the top one or two uses. A final public input meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12, 6 – 8 p.m. in the Mineral Building at the fairgrounds. The district hopes to forward recommendations to its board by late April, in time to prepare a Proposition 84 grant application.
