These are the stories we are working on for this week's newspaper:
  • Image makeover needed: In the soon-to-be-released grand jury report, the jurors said the county’s Alcohol and Drug and Mental Health departments are suffering from a poor public image.
  • Help at the jail: The Board of Supervisors approved the sheriff’s request to hire four corrections officers, but not before reminding him the county is facing a $3 million budget problem.
  • Water disaster?: The state has already enacted emergency conservation measures. The county is thinking about declaring a local disaster as well.

Rash of vehicle break-ins

Vehicles parked in East Quincy were targeted by thieves last weekend.

The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office received at least 11 reports related to items stolen between Friday morning and Sunday afternoon.

The sheriff’s office said it is actively investigating the crimes, but had not identified any suspects as of Tuesday morning.

“It appears to be at least a couple people doing this,” said Sgt. Steve Peay. “It looks like they are randomly going around looking for unlocked vehicles.”

A caller Saturday night reported chasing two young males who were breaking into cars in that area.

The report said the two were about 6 feet tall, wearing dark clothing and carrying flashlights.

Items reported stolen during the weekend spree include at least two wallets, checks, cash, a camera, a GPS device, a radar detector and a satellite radio.

One victim said the thieves probably smoke because her car smelled of cigarettes.

The calls to the Sheriff’s Office began coming in Friday morning at 7:45 a.m. The last call was made at 2:45 p.m. Sunday.

Most of the calls (seven) were made Friday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call 283-6375.
