The California Highway Patrol is investigating whether marijuana played a role in a vehicle accident early this morning that left one Chico resident dead and another injured.

Kelly M. Larocca, 37, was driving a 2007 Honda Accord westbound on Highway 70 near Squirre l Creek Road at 4:45 a.m. at an unknown rate of speed in cold, intermittently icy conditions. Overhead flashing signs were on and advising of icy conditions.

While in the first left curve west of the Spring Garden overpass, the Honda started to rotate counterclockwise and rotated off the roadway and onto the south shoulder.

While on the south shoulder, the vehicle was facing south, at or near 90 degrees to the roadway.

The Honda left the roadway and dropped approximately 15 feet before hitting the ground and rolling.

Larocca and passenger Michael S. Foster, 47, also of Chico, were wearing seat belts. Larocca was pronounced dead at the scene. Foster was transported to Plumas District Hospital, where he was treated for a head injury and abdominal pain.

Investigators noticed the odor of burnt marijuana in the Honda. According to the CHP, driver impairment is unknown at this time and is currently being investigated.

<br />Can you provide a link or reference to that study? I'd be interested in reading it, or at least see who funded the study.

One hates to hear of a death, but at least an innocent person or family wasn't taken-out by a driver who was probably DUI - Drugs (Marijuana). Hopefully this reminds the pro-potheads that marijuana is indeed a dangerous substance.
