Exaggerated threats Wednesday prompts QHS to send home students, staff

A persistent caller from a collection agency led Quincy High School administrators to take safety measures on Wednesday afternoon.

Teachers and students were sent home and after-school activities were cancelled because of the threatening tone of the caller.

According to the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office, the incident was blown out of proportion thanks to social networking sites and text messaging.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, the sheriff reported, “the incident was exaggerated by way of rumors and assumptions based on prior incidents.

“The Sheriff’s Office asks that incidents at the schools not be exaggerated and rumored upon especially by means of social networking sites and text messaging.”

The Sheriff’s Office received a call from the high school at 3:43 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to the sheriff, the unknown person “made numerous calls to the high school yelling at the staff that he was going to come to the high school and have the teachers arrested because they were obstructing his efforts in trying to contact a school employee.”

The school used its call system to notify parents and students of the reported threats.

On Thursday, it was determined that the suspect was calling from a collection agency, trying to contact a school employee.
