The body of a Janesville man, who was last seen more than three weeks ago, was found Friday, Feb. 10, in the Antelope Lake region of Plumas County.

According to the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office, the body of Richard Earl Welton, 54, was discovered at 11:30 a.m. about a mile from where his truck was found abandoned Jan. 26.

The cause of Welton’s death was still under investigation as of Monday, Feb. 13.

Welton’s body was found with the help of members from the California Rescue Dog Association. The dog unit was training and searching for Welton when they found him.

According to the sheriff, Welton was last seen around Jan. 19.

On Jan. 26, woodcutters contacted a United States Forest Service officer near Antelope Summit on the Janesville Grade in Plumas County. They reported finding an abandoned white Ford F-150 extra cab on a dirt road.

A check of the vehicle’s registration revealed the truck belonged to Welton. The officer was unable to contact Welton at his Janesville residence.

An immediate search began in the area around the abandoned truck.

Law enforcement agencies and search and rescue teams from Lassen and Plumas counties launched a full-scale search for Welton.

Six search teams, including scent-detecting K-9 dogs, were used in an effort to locate Welton. The immediate search was called off after no trace of the missing man was discovered after two days.

Lassen and Plumas County sheriffs continued an investigation into Welton’s disappearance.

The Plumas County Sheriffs Office thanked the members of the California Rescue Dog Association and the sheriff’s search and rescue team for eventually discovering the location of Welton’s body.

Plumas County Sheriff Greg Hagwood issued a statement saying, “The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office would like to send its condolences to the Welton family and friends.”
