Portola voters recalled Councilman Dan Wilson with a vote of 242 to 235. The votes were tallied during a recount this afternoon.

Retired logger Phil Oels will replace Wilson and will be sworn into office at tonight’s city council meeting. Oels garnered 180 votes, while John Gault received 95 votes and Mike Rush, 51, on the recall ballot.

The ballots were originally counted Tuesday night resulting in a 231 to 230 vote to recall, however 16 ballots weren’t tallied pending certification from the County Registrar of Voters. All 16 were certified earlier today.

Recall proponents targeted Wilson last summer when he was still mayor. They accused him of refusing “to consider the concerns of the people regarding water and sewer rate hikes.”

When the final mail-in ballot was counted Tuesday night, the vote was 231 to 230 to recall Portola Councilman Dan Wilson. But with 16 ballots yet to be certified by the Plumas County Registrar of Voters, the fate of Wilson is still to be determined.

A recount, including those 16 ballots, if certified, will be held Wednesday afternoon.

If the recall stands, then retired logger Phil Oels will replace Wilson. Oels garnered 174 votes, while John Gault received 93 votes and Mike Rush, 48, on the recall ballot.
