In a close game between the Portola and Quincy high school baseball teams last Friday, March 23, Portola scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for an 11-10 victory.

The game began with Quincy taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but then Portola responded with one run in the second inning and six runs in the third inning to take a 7-3 advantage.

After each team added two runs in the fourth inning, Quincy brought across five more runs in the fifth inning to take a 10-9 lead.

Portola tied the game with one run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, with two runners on base, Portola senior Billy Broad blasted a deep hit into center field to bring across the winning run.

Ricky Lowdermilk earned the win for Portola by pitching the final two innings and giving up no hits and no runs while striking out four batters.

Broad pitched the first five innings for Portola, allowing seven hits and six earned runs while registering six strikeouts and two walks.

On offense, Broad, Mario Montemayor, Klint Williams and Oscar Romero claimed two hits apiece for the Portola Tigers. Lowdermilk delivered three RBIs, and Romero captured two RBIs. Williams and Romero scored three runs each, and Lowdermilk earned two runs. Romero collected two doubles and Broad hit one double.

Quincy’s offense was led by Matt Beeson, with two hits, three RBIs and a double. Jerry Olgesby compiled three RBIs and Cole Vanetti posted two RBIs. Cody McDonald, Jake Hatzell and Vanetti scored two runs apiece. Cal Blanton and Brad Kaumans each added a double.

Portola and Quincy are both scheduled to compete at a tournament in Biggs this weekend.
