Weather Discussion; The Old Forecaster

Chris Fontana, "The Old Forecaster" 6/17/2013

The low pressure area in the Pacific is beginning to move slowly eastward and will move inland Tuesday and Wednesday over the Pacific Northwest and Northern California.  Today will start off sunny with clouds increasing along the coast north and northern mountains this afternoon with a chance of isolated showers over the northwest corner of the state this afternoon.  The valley and areas to the east will be sunny with a few afternoon clouds.  Temperatures today will be a few degrees cooler.  Southerly winds will increase this afternoon.

Tuesday through midday Wednesday the north coast....Trinity, Siskiyou, northern Shasta, and Modoc counties will  be partly cloudy with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms.  There is also a chance of thunderstorms over Plumas and Lassen counties Tuesday afternoon and evening.  The valley will see a few clouds but no showers.  Gusty south to southwest winds are expected Tuesday afternoon and evening with gusty southwest to northwest winds Wednesday.  Temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday will be 8 to 15 degrees below normal with the valley in the lower 80s and the foothills and mid elevations (1500 to  4000') in the mid 60s and 70s.

The low will continue to move slowly eastward and will be east of our area by late Wednesday.  Thursday there will still be scattered clouds over the far north end of the state but the rest of the north state will be sunny. Temperatures Thursday will be warmer but still below normal.  Friday a weak high pressure area will be along the coast (see map below).  This will bring sunny skies and warmer temperatures to the inland areas of the north state.  Temperatures by the weekend will be 2 to 4 degrees above normal.
