Water quality notice

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER

February 2011

The Plumas Eureka Community Services District Domestic Water System Has Levels of Arsenic Above the Federal Drinking Water Standard

Our domestic water system recently violated the new federal drinking water standard for arsenic.  Although this is not an emergency, you have the right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.

What happened?

The USEPA standard, enacted in January 2006, lowered the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of arsenic from 0.050 milligrams per liter (mg/l) to 0.010 mg/l.  This standard was adopted by the state on November 28, 2008.  We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants throughout the year.  Our results indicate the 2010 fourth quarter average (Oct., Nov., Dec.) Well #1B was 0.011 mg/L and Well #2 was 0.014 mg/L, which is above the current federal and state standard.

What should I do?

You do not need to use an alternative water supply (e.g., bottled water).

This is not an emergency.  If it had been, you would have been notified immediately.  However, some people who drink water containing arsenic in excess of the MCL over many years may experience skin damage or circulatory system problems, and may have an increased risk to getting cancer.

If you have other health issues concerning the consumption of this water, you may wish to consult your doctor.

What is being done?

The water quality tests have been evaluated for the test wells drilled in October 2010. Each test well has potential to supply Plumas Eureka with drinking water that is under the Federal arsenic limit. Stantec Engineering, formally ECO:Logic Engineering, will be making recommendations for the next steps to take to get the water into our system. We will continue to discuss the arsenic situation during our monthly Board meetings which are held at 9:00am on the second Wednesday of each month at the Fire Station, 200 Lundy Lane.
