The recent outcry over wording in the Plumas County General Plan has garnered a lot of attention the past few weeks.

It came to a head Jan. 17 when a group of concerned citizens from Indian Valley voiced opposition to the plan during a planning commission meeting in Quincy. The Indian Valley Citizens for Private Property Rights argued that the county’s new general plan — which has been years in the making — could lead to a loss of private property rights. They called the plan “Agenda 21 in disguise.”

Agenda 21 is a document adopted by the United Nations in 1992. It is designed to be a blueprint of how jurisdictions worldwide should move toward sustainable economic growth that simultaneously protects and renews environmental resources.

The recent frigid conditions that blanketed Plumas County for nearly three weeks appear to have lifted a little. But the cold weather left its mark. And there is little doubt that we will see more of it before spring arrives.

While the snow plow drivers enjoy a well-deserved rest, this is a good time to emphasize the importance of being careful, aware and better prepared when the next round of snow and ice hits.

We can’t afford to ignore chance to get jail funds

If you had a chance to get rid of your beat-up old automobile and buy a new $20,000 car for two thousand bucks, what would you do?

It would be a pretty easy decision.

Plumas County is facing a similar decision concerning its long-outdated jail. With a potential $20 million grant within its reach, the county could realistically replace its jail with a state-of-the-art facility for about $2 million.

The time has come for sane gun control

The recent senseless killing of adults and so many innocent children at Sandy Hook Elementary School has once again opened the dialog about gun control. I don’t know why it takes such a heinous act to restart this conversation. But once again, gun control is front and center in our national conscience.

Since I was a teenager I have been a hunter and a gun owner. My father, a police officer and hunter, taught me to respect and shoot guns at an early age. I bought my first shotgun at 16 and my first rifle a year later.
