The Saturday Night Races was no picnic for the race cars. They were held in conjunction with the County Picnic and a car show at the fairgrounds June 2. In the beginning, mud was flying on the track. Later it was the cars.
The Maddbuzz race team was victorious in the Pure Mini race. Lance “Slick” Bain lead by 0.802 second against his teammate Jon Busselen. Brittney Nieman followed for third. Lary Whitebird retired after nine laps. This class continues to jostle for first place.
The DART Dwarf cars had 13 cars running the A and B main events. The B main finished with nine cars still in the race. Rodney Sweet led Jessie Van Kol by 2.898 sec. for first place. Jason Crosby was in third ahead of Race Wilson. The A main had a change of leaders. Vucki Wilson Jr. took first ahead of Dave Richardson by a difference of 2.223 sec. Chase Nieman was just 0.27 sec. behind Richardson. Jason Crosby was in fourth.
The IMCA Modified had interstate rivals in the main event. Richard Papenhausen had several generations of his family from Greenville in the stands and well as those from Chico. The No. 1 car of Shawn Natenstedt from Fernley was here to challenge Richard’s winning streak. The race with 15 cars began with Erica Harman in the pole position. After 13 laps the grid was reduced to six cars with Papenhausen, Natenstedt and Harmon out of the race. Erica’s car hung suspended between two tow trucks in the middle of the field. Wade Kennemore took over the leadership of the main event. He took first with Chris Nieman in second. Their difference was 3.177 sec. Mitch Murphy was in third with Joe Wood in fourth. The Wood crew members had rebuilt their car. Their exhaustion turned as the race finished. Congratulations to the Wood team for a job well done. Erica Harmon had turned in the best lap time and looked as if she was on the way to an upset.
The double header of the American Valley Speedway calendar is coming June 15 – 16. The Friday night race will have the Dwarf cars and the IMCA Modifieds. The Saturday night races feature the California Civil War Sprint Car Series with the Pure Minis. For more information call 283-2175 or visit americanvalleyspeedway.com.
