At the first of two rate study presentations to the Portola City Council to discuss increases in city water and sewer rates, Mayor Pro Tem Juliana Mark asked, “Why now? Right now, people are having a hard time of it, so why are we talking about rate increases now?”

Feather River College District’s board met Thursday, Feb. 17, and with the exception of finances, heard generally good news. However, there were a few shadows in all the sunshine.

Susy Pearce breathes a sigh of relief, knowing that she has protected the once-imperiled Pearce Family Ranch for her sons, Cody (23) and Clancy (19). On Dec. 27, 2010, Pearce signed a conservation easement with the Feather River Land Trust, protecting the 318-acre ranch from subdivision and keeping the ranch intact for ranching and wildlife habitat.
