The roads are clear, the lodges are open and the wildflowers are in bloom. Eastern Plumas is ready for Memorial Day.

  “The people are already arriving,” said Audrey Ellis, the executive director of the Eastern Plumas Chamber of Commerce. “We definitely have noticed an increase in traffic.”

  Janice Boucher-Hunt, co-owner of Sardine Lake Resort, echoed that sentiment.

  “Memorial Day is already booked,” she said. “People are already out on the lake fishing.”

  Last year, resort owners were contending with snow even into July, but this year the lack of snowfall made it easier for them to open up in time for the traditional kickoff to summer.

  In addition to Sardine, the Gray Eagle Lodge and Packer Lake Lodge are set to open this weekend as well. All offer dining options, trails and picturesque lake settings.

  At lower elevations, the Graeagle Merchants Association is sponsoring the Downtown Graeagle Shop-Hop. The stores will be open Saturday through Monday of Memorial Day weekend. Shoppers are invited to pick up a “passport” and have it stamped by participating merchants for an opportunity to win a prize.

  On Sunday the Mohawk Valley Artists’ Guild is holding its annual “Bursting into Spring” art and craft show at the Graeagle Fire Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

  For those who would rather be outdoors, Jeanne Graham at J&J Grizzly Store and Camping Resort at Lake Davis said, “The fishing is great!”

  The lake is already open for trout season and the streams leading into the lake open Saturday.

  The campgrounds are open with the exception of Grasshopper.

  Beginning this weekend, the Grizzly Store resumes its popular Saturday barbecues.

  From fishing to shopping, and golfing to sightseeing, there is something for everyone to enjoy this Memorial Day in Eastern Plumas.
