History Night at the Museum: summer series begins with 1850s

Those interested in local history might like to attend the season opening of History Night at the Museum Thursday, May 31.

Historian, author and artist Pat Kurtz, California Engels Mining President Norman Lamb and Trina Cunningham will be the presenters at the Greenville Cy Hall Memorial Museum from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Last year, the season ended with Maidu cultural and language teacher Farrell Cunningham talking about the way of life before the miners and settlers arrived in the California Gold Rush era.

That era is now the focus, and Lamb will begin with a short talk about the mining that brought people to Indian Valley.

Kurtz will then talk about the communities settled by pioneers, starting with Peter Lassen and going through the end of the 1850s.

Cunningham will share the Maidu part of this story.

Their presentations are expected to fill the first hour, with the final 30 minutes dedicated to questions and answers.

Kest Porter, museum president nominee, said he hopes that providing the outline of local history will spark interest and intrigue in people who will then want to know more.

Maybe some will be interested enough that they will loan or donate artifacts, photos and stories for sharing at the museum.

Admission is free, he said, it’s a gift to the community, and in return, some may choose to help gather more history in return.

There will be museum membership and donation information available during the event.

For more information, call Porter on his cellphone at 616-0226.
