Soroptimists host annual garden tour

The 13th annual Soroptimist International of Quincy Garden Tour features 4 local and 2 Mohawk Vista gardens, like the unusual one pictured. This unique greenhouse specializes in indoor plants and a model train exhibit. Tickets cost $10 in advance or $12 the day of the event, June 15. In Quincy tickets are available at Carey Candy Co., Epilog Books, Gray’s Flower Garden, Great Northern Hair Co., La Casa Bella, Quincy Hot Spot and Ranchito Motel. In Eastern Plumas tickets may be purchased at the chamber of commerce, Crazyblooms Florist, Addie’s Floral Cottage and Plumas Bank. Vacation Bible School offers ‘county fair’ theme

  For more than 40 years the Chester Church of Christ J.O.Y. bus was a common sight on Chester Streets each Sunday morning as it picked up and delivered the community’s children for Bible Hour.

 

Lake Davis Spring Derby approaches

  It’s that time again for fishers to pull out their rods and reels and head to Lake Davis. The annual Lake Davis Spring Fishing Derby is set to take place June 15. The derby starts at 6 a.m. and lasts until 5 that afternoon.

  The derby was hosted by the Portola Rotary Club in the past, but the Graeagle Plumas Alliance will hold the event this year. Rotary held the annual event for more than 10 years.

 

Susanville smokejumper killed fighting wildfire in Modoc County

  The U.S. Forest Service confirmed Tuesday that a firefighter was killed while fighting a lightning-strike fire in the Modoc National Forest on Monday.

  According to Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell, 28-year-old smokejumper Luke Sheehy was killed after being struck by a dead tree just before 5 p.m.

 

Forest Service adds night-flying helicopter to suppression efforts

  U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell recently announced that the agency will begin night helicopter wildfire suppression operations this season in Southern California.

  “The re-introduction of Forest Service night helicopter firefighting operations in Southern California further establishes the agency’s commitment to protect lives and property in the region,” said Tidwell.
