As a way of educating the local community about sustainable agricultural methods, the Dawn Gardens Institute is hosting its annual compost workshop June 15.
This free workshop, which begins at 10 a.m., is designed to help aspiring gardeners start or improve upon their composting systems. The methods described in this workshop are depended upon by Dawn Gardens to maintain and improve the soil fertility of its small-scale organic farm.

The 13th annual Soroptimist International of Quincy Garden Tour features 4 local and 2 Mohawk Vista gardens, like the unusual one pictured. This unique greenhouse specializes in indoor plants and a model train exhibit. Tickets cost $10 in advance or $12 the day of the event, June 15. In Quincy tickets are available at Carey Candy Co., Epilog Books, Gray’s Flower Garden, Great Northern Hair Co., La Casa Bella, Quincy Hot Spot and Ranchito Motel. In Eastern Plumas tickets may be purchased at the chamber of commerce, Crazyblooms Florist, Addie’s Floral Cottage and Plumas Bank. It’s that time again for fishers to pull out their rods and reels and head to Lake Davis. The annual Lake Davis Spring Fishing Derby is set to take place June 15. The derby starts at 6 a.m. and lasts until 5 that afternoon.
The derby was hosted by the Portola Rotary Club in the past, but the Graeagle Plumas Alliance will hold the event this year. Rotary held the annual event for more than 10 years.
