School districts, hospital districts, city council have open seats on ballot

Voters will have a chance to fill a number of seats on local boards in the November election.

The Feather River College board of trustees will have two open seats, Plumas Unified School District will have three and the Sierra-Plumas Joint Unified School District will have two. Candidates for the school districts must be registered voters residing within the trustee area they are filing for.

Local health care districts will also be looking to fill some seats. Eastern Plumas Health Care has two openings, Indian Valley Health Care has three, Plumas District Hospital has two and Seneca Healthcare District has two. Candidates must be registered voters residing within the boundaries of the respective hospital district.

The Portola City Council will have three open seats, and an open seat for city treasurer. Candidates must be registered voters residing within city boundaries.

The treasurer position carries with it a $100 monthly stipend.

There has not been an elected city treasurer since the term of Richard Bass expired in November 2000.

The City Council appointed City Manager Leslie Tigan to the post, which she has held since 2001 because no one ran in subsequent elections. Tigan does not take the $100 compensation.

Those interested in running for a school district or health care district seat may pick up a Declaration of Candidacy from the Plumas County Clerk beginning Monday, July 16. Forms are due by 5 p.m. Aug. 10. The clerk’s office is located on the ground floor of the county courthouse in Quincy.

Those interested in serving on the Portola City Council need to pick up their forms from the city clerk’s office in Portola.

For the Sierra-Plumas Joint Unified School District, candidates must get their paperwork from and file with the Sierra County Clerk.

For more information, call Kathy Williams, Plumas County clerk-recorder, at 283-6256.
