Retired Plumas County Sheriff’s sergeant John Edward Sanders peacefully passed from this life, Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 21, 2009, at Enloe Medical Center in Chico. His loving family was at his side.
7 Born in Noble, La., to the late Oklahoma natives Finis “Mac” and Birdie (Turman) Sanders Feb. 13, 1929, at the age of 10 he and his family relocated to Westwood. Here John finished his grammar school education and went on to graduate from Westwood High School as a member of the “class of 1949.”
An accomplished athlete John excelled in football while also lettering in track, baseball and basketball.
John had begun working for Fruit Growers Supply Company while attending high school and following graduation went to work in their mill for three years before beginning a fulfilling thirty-five year career in law enforcement.
On Aug. 15, 1948, in the historical Peoples Church, John married his high school sweetheart, the former LaDonna May Yarber and to this union two sons and a daughter were born.
John began his law enforcement career with the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department in 1953, working there for two years before going to work for the Plumas County Sheriff’s Department.
He rose to the rank of sergeant in 1960 and was named Officer of the Year in 1970. He retired in December 1983 after serving the residents of Plumas County from the Chester Substation for 29 years.
John’s common sense and compassionate approach to law enforcement brought him respect from those on both sides of the law as well as the many peers he mentored throughout his career.
Following his retirement from Plumas County he worked briefly for the Lake Almanor Security Patrol.
John’s passion outside of his family and his work was hunting and fishing. He found great pleasure in spending time in the outdoors with his sons, and when the topic of who the greatest outdoorsman in the family was he would just remind them the proof was on his walls.
He also found solace in working in his shop as well as tending to his vegetable garden and flowers.
John was a longtime member of the Westwood Masonic Lodge #501 F. & A. M. as well as the Chester Lions Club. He served the youth of the community as president of the Chester Little League twice.

The family suggests any remembrances in John’s memory be made to either the Plumas County Sheriff’s Christmas Toy Program or the Sacramento Shriners’ Children’s Hospital, c/o Fehrman Mortuary and Crematory, P.O. Box 803, Greenville, CA 95947.

For many years, Doris was active in the American Baptist Missionary Society and was a council member of Church Women United. She spent many hours working in the kitchen for church events. In 1989, she left her home of 49 years and moved north to Chester, to be near her daughters.
Doris was loved by her family and had many friends. Her life was devoted to raising her four children and helping with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Everyone loved listening to her stories of growing up in a large family on the farm. She kept her wonderful smile and sense of humor her entire life, and all that knew her loved her. She loved the Lord with all of her heart.
