Remember When 8/26/2009
We learn that the early heavy frosts of the past week seriously injured the potato crops of Plumas County valleys. In consequence of this, the potato yield will be about half of what it would have been. Other vegetables of a tender nature suffered as well.
75 YEARS AGO….1934
Quincy has a new fire protection feature this week as a result of installing a direct connection from the Pacific Telephone Company switchboard to the alarm siren at the fire house. Persons discovering fire may now cause the siren to blow by telephoning to central and the operator will activate the switch on her switchboard to operate the siren.
The business district of Portola was threatened by fire early this morning when flames destroyed the back part of Portola Hardware Store.
50 YEARS AGO….1959
Bids were opened this week for the construction of the proposed Frenchman Dam on Little Last Chance Creek, located some eight miles from Chilcoot. A Reno firm was awarded the $1,089,000 bid and will begin the project in September. There were seven other bids but the low bid was well below the $2,060,000 appropiated budget allocated for the project.
30 YEARS AGO….1979
An urgency county ordinance declaring a moratorium on any zone changes affecting Sierra Valley while Plumas County’s general plan is being updated was unanimously adopted this week by the Plumas County Board of Supervisors. The action effectively stops any rezoning of general plan revisions being sought by B.J. Pearson for his proposed Ramelli Ranch development east of Portola.
