Fishing Report

10/28/2009

Lake Davis

Fishing results continue to be very good for fish up to 19–20 inches. The daytime surface water temperatures are running 53 degrees. Limits are the rule for all types of angling with the key to success being fishing the correct area and fishing at the correct depth.
Dillard’s Guided Fishing clients caught and released 52 fish up to 19 inches Oct. 15, while trolling at a depth of 1–6 feet. The area Ed trolled was from the boat dock north to the area off Lightning Tree. Anglers landed fish all day; however, the best time was from 12:30-4:30 p.m. A black olive leach in size 10 was hot up to 2 p.m. then the Copper Red Head Wee Dick nite became the favorite.

Shore fishing has become productive with the most fish coming from the Fairview area. Night crawlers and powerbait have been the baits of choice.
Flyfishing can range from fair-to-middling to great, where and when one fishes and when. Saturday afternoon from 12:30-2:30 p.m. there was a hatch (midge pupa?) that had the fish in a frenzy.
Success comes by presenting a nymph about 36 inches under an indicator or casting and stripping with a floating or intermediate line. While every fly fisherman has his or her favorite pattern, some that have caught a bunch of fish are the pheasant tail BH FB, Prince Nymph BH, Olive Umpqua no name damsel, J. Fair wiggley tail in olive glimmer and cinnamon.
The northeast area of the lake is producing the greatest number of fish. Future results will depend on the weather.

Frenchman Lake
Fishing offshore and trolling have been good all week.
Mr. Goekler of Portola and Mr. O’Brian of Doyle were flyfishing in the float tubes by Frenchman’s boat ramp. Both caught 10–12 rainbow trout each, 12–16 inches long, using oliver-colored flies and black and olive Burchrest flies.
Snallygaster was the other place to be on the lake. There were reports of catching limits of rainbow trout, 16–20 inches long.
