Kayaker drowns in the Feather River

Susan Kaiser, 37, drowned while kayaking in the Feather River Canyon the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 29.

 

Smoke for the Bullards Bar Fire is covering Plumas County

A fire that started on on the Tahoe National Forest near Bullards Bar Reservoir is spreading smoke into Plumas County. Smoke is visible through much of the county and ash is falling in many areas.

 

College launches new student programs, keeps wary eye on state budget situation

As Feather River College gears up for the 2010-11 year, the New Student Orientation Day Friday, Aug. 20, was packed with information, energy and just plain fun.

Students relaxed on the lawn, enjoyed a barbecue lunch, visited and got used to being on campus - or back on campus.
 

UP pays $17.3 million in damages for Rich Fire

Union Pacific Railroad Co. has agreed to pay more than $17 million for damages and suppression costs related to the 2008 Rich Fire on the Plumas National Forest.

The payment, announced by government officials, settled a federal claim after a Forest Service investigation concluded a crew of railroad workers negligently ignited the fire by cutting and welding rail without using tent shields.

Kathy Williams, Plumas County Clerk/Recorder, reports that her office is getting many calls from people who didn't receive their "Measure B ballot." The reason they didn't receive ballots, however, is that they're not in the Plumas District Hospital area.
