His friends acknowledge that Jarold Hovland is no choirboy.

The 33-year-old Greenville man has a history of violence, heavy drug and alcohol abuse, and a criminal record to back it up.

And it was an act of violence that changed Hovland’s life forever.

Maidu to launch trial projects in Humbug Valley

Maidu Summit Consortium efforts to regain ancestral land in Humbug Valley made national news in a Tuesday, Nov. 15, Wall Street Journal article by Justin Scheck.

Summit members have been vying with the California Department of Fish and Game over the land, both claiming to want it for the best public uses, including recreation.

City of Portola discusses: to burn or not to burn

Portola’s ERC (environmental reclamation center) is bursting at the seams these days as its pile of green waste — pine needles, branches, yard trimmings — grows and grows.

“Getting rid of the green waste has been a challenge to say the least,” City Manager Leslie Tigan told the City Council at its recent regular meeting.

Chorus to offer winter concerts Dec. 2 –4

The award winning Chester Community Chorus (CCC) will present three winter concerts Dec. 2 – 4 in the Lake Almanor Basin. Shows are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday.

Titled “Christmas in our Hearts,” the concert will include, according to Director Elsie Wesley, “selections featuring traditional, contemporary and light classical carols.”

Woman arrested after drug overdose leaves boy in coma

A 31-year-old Greenville woman faces felony charges after a 14-year-old boy overdosed on drugs she allegedly gave him to sell.

The boy was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. He was in a coma when he arrived, but his condition has improved.

Watershed group makes cloud seeding recommendations

The Almanor Basin Watershed Advisory Committee (ABWAC) met Tuesday, Nov. 15, and devoted the bulk of the meeting to the ongoing topic of cloud seeding in the Lake Almanor Basin.

The issue first surfaced when resident Lisa Marcus, at the urging of ABWAC member, David Durkin, attended the March 9 advisory committee meeting. During the public comment period she read a summary of her concerns that included questions she wanted answered by the Pacific, Gas & Electric Co.
