  • Townhalls attract crowds: Assemblyman Brian Dahle and Sen. Ted Gaines met with constituents in Quincy and Chester during a three-meeting swing through Plumas and Lassen counties.
  • New leader: After nearly three decades, the Plumas County Mental Health Commission has a new leader. Supervisor Kevin Goss was named to replace Hank Eisenmann.
  • Home away from home: As of last week, new homes had been found for all of the patients at Quincy Nursing & Rehabilitation and most had already moved.

Going the distance: 11-year-old PCT hiker has her eye on the triple crown

Who knew that the state of the economy would start 11-year-old Reed Gjonnes, aka Sunshine, off on the adventure of a lifetime and start her on the path to earning the Triple Crown of hiking?

The story came out when Sunshine and her dad, Eric, who are hiking the entire 2,650 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), made a week-long stop in the Drakesbad and Old Station area at the end of July.

Plan will keep fair and staff intact for another year

Supervisor Jon Kennedy devised the plan.

Fair Manager John Steffanic and his two-person staff agreed to take pay cuts to make the plan work.

The result is the Plumas-Sierra County Fair likely will stay in business with its current staff — at least through next summer.

State Rt 147 to be closed for road work

Cal Trans has announced that this road work and road  closure has been postponed until August 18th.

State Route 147 in Plumas County will be CLOSED from the junction of State Route 36 to County Road A-21. The closure begins tomorrow, August 11, 2011 and continues through August 24, 2011, 24 HOURS PER DAY. A detour is available via County Road A-21. The closure is necessary to facilitate roadway rehabilitation and widening, which includes adding 2-ft paved shoulders, improving the driving surface and striping. If so, you and your significant other are invited to attend the annual 1934 Birthday Party Bash at Gansner Park in Quincy Sunday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m.

Claiming 1934 was a vintage year, the late Bob Melms started this yearly celebration nearly two decades ago and it continues to get bigger and better every year.
