These are the stories we are working on for this week's newspaper:
  • Deputy shooting fallout: The children of a Portola man who was shot and killed at Eastern Plumas Health Care last year are seeking millions of dollars in damages.
  • The trout must go: The state is planning to pull all of the brook trout out of a Plumas County lake in order to protect the yellow-legged frog.
  • Inspections delayed: Cal Fire was scheduled to begin property inspections this week, but decided to wait until the public could better understand what the inspectors are doing.

Two wildfires reported in Plumas County

Plumas County’s first two wildfires of the season were reported Sunday afternoon, May 6.

According the U.S. Forest Service, both fires were quickly contained and extinguished. No structures were threatened.

The first fire burned about one-half acre above the Crescent Grade near Greenville. A second fire charred about two acres above Chandler Road near Quincy.

Both fires were “person-caused,” according to Forest Service Information Officer Lee Anne Schramel-Taylor. She added that although both fires are under investigation, neither appeared to be suspicious.

Schramel-Taylor said wind was a primary factor.

“Fire season has started,” Schramel-Taylor said. “It’s dry out there, and people need to be careful.”

The forest service recommended that residents take the time to clean up pine needles and other potential fire fuels.
