The Plumas National Forest Fisheries Department along with community volunteers will host the annual free fishing derby at Round Valley Reservoir this Saturday, Sept. 8. The derby will be held between 8 a.m. and noon.

Youngsters under 15 are invited to participate in the derby. There will be prizes for the biggest fish and the most fish caught. Contestants will be split up into three age groups for more chances to win a prize.

Besides the derby there will be many other fun activities for families. Children may walk through and explore a giant inflatable fish. Other activities include story time and educational lectures.

Light snacks and refreshments will sustain kids through the derby.

Two human-sized fish characters, Frank and Francis Fish, will be on site to provide entertainment for children and will be available for pictures.

Similarly, Smokey Bear plans to make an appearance, accompanied by a Plumas engine and its crew.

“This is a great event that brings the kids and families of Plumas County outside to learn about ecology and just have a lot of fun,” said organizer Lauren Tasaki-Senter. “It’s something to look forward to every summer.”

Co-organizer Jennifer Kaufmann added, “It helps facilitate an outdoor experience for the whole family.”

Participants should bring their own fishing gear if possible. Children who have none may be able to use a limited number of poles, hooks and bait.

For more information, contact Fisheries Biological Technicians Jennifer Kaufmann or Lauren Tasaki at 283-7828 or Fire Prevention Officer Brigitte Foster at 284-7130.
