Water quality notice
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
October 2012
The Plumas Eureka Community Services Domestic Water System Has Levels of Arsenic Above the
Federal Drinking Water Standard
Our domestic water system recently violated the new federal drinking water standard for arsenic.
Although this is not an emergency, you have the right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.
What happened?
The USEPA standard, enacted in January 2006, lowered the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of arsenic from 0.050 milligrams per liter (mg/l) to 0.010 mg/l. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants throughout the year. Our results indicate the 2012 third quarter average (Jul, Aug, Sep) for Well #2 is 0.015 mg/l, which is above the current federal standard.
What should I do?
You do not need to use an alternative water supply (e.g., bottled water).
This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing arsenic in excess of the MCL over many years may experience skin damage or circulatory system problems, and may have an increased risk to getting cancer.
If you have other health issues concerning the consumption of this water, you may wish to consult your doctor.
What is being done?
PECSD is continuing to work with Stantec Engineering and Plumas GeoHydrology in determining the best alternative for providing water with lower arsenic levels. Stantec Engineering will be discussing different options with the PECSD Board of Directors at the October 10, 2012 monthly Board meeting. The Board may approve a plan of action to remedy the high arsenic levels in our drinking water supply. All interested parties are invited to attend and participate in the discussions. Monthly Board meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at the Fire Station, 200 Lundy Lane, and start at 9:00am.
Please feel free to contact me at 836-4113 if you have any questions or need further information.
Respectfully,
Frank Motzkus
