Councilman resigns

Debra Moore

Portola City Councilman Curt McBride took his resignation letter to City Hall last Friday.

McBride’s last meeting will be tonight and his last official day as a city representative will be Dec. 31.

In his letter, McBride said that “after a great deal of thought and struggle” he was tendering his resignation “due to personal circumstances.”

During a phone interview Monday morning, McBride cited a number of off-the-record reasons for his departure, but would only officially say, “For my business and for my health it is time to move on.”

The council will now have to decide how to replace McBride. City Manager Leslie Tigan said that the city could conduct a special election or appoint someone to fulfill McBride’s term, which runs through 2014. Tigan said she already has a letter of interest from outgoing Councilman William Weaver, who lost his seat in the November election.

Additionally, the county’s newly elected treasurer, Christine Pearson, has moved out of the city limits so is no longer qualified to hold that elected office. The City Council will also discuss how to fill that position.

And finally the city now has two vacant seats on its planning commission. Pam Gill resigned and Michelle Gault, who was only recently appointed to the commission, is now a councilmember.

The council is scheduled to elect a new mayor and mayor pro tem tonight, as well as administer the oath of office to newly elected council member Gault. The council is also scheduled to recognize Weaver’s contributions to the city.
