Opportunity to Comment on the Chips Fire PG&E Right of Way (R/W) Salvage Timber Project
The Mt. Hough Ranger District proposes approximately nine miles (up to 250 acres) of PG&E R/W corridors (Caribou-Westwood 60 KV, Caribou-Plumas Jct. 60 KV, Caribou-Table Mtn 230 KV, Caribou-Palermo 115 KV, Caribou #2 60 KV, and Butt Valley-Caribou 115 KV) for economical tree recovery. The focus of this particular project is centered on the power transmission and distribution R/W corridors, where PG&E owns, maintains, and manages such infrastructure but  is not entitled to fee simple ownership on the land which infrastructure is located [ownership is National Forest System (NFS) and managed by the USDA- Forest Service]. This R/W corridor and immediate adjacent land contains a heavy coniferous timber cover that was adversely affected by the fire in varying degrees. In order to protect existing infrastructure, PG&E routinely engages in selective hazard tree removal that the company deems a threat to power lines.
The project is located within the footprint of the Chips Fire perimeter, south of Lake Almanor, CA, between the unincorporated towns of Canyon Dam, CA and Belden, CA, and within the vicinity of Butt Valley Reservoir. The legal description is as follows: T26N, R8E, sections 5-7, 18, 19, 30, and 31; T26N, R7E, sections 2, 11-13, 24, and 25; T27N, R8E: sections 28, 29, and 32; T27N, R7E: sections 27, 34, and 35. All townships and ranges are within the Mt Diablo Base Meridian (MDBM). A draft Decision Memo detailing the proposal is available for review at the Mt. Hough Ranger District office.
