FRC offers community ed soccer course this winter

Those who complain about a lack of interesting activities during snowy and rainy weather need complain no longer. Feather River College is offering a community education class that features indoor soccer.

The program is offered to both youths and adults and all skill levels are welcome. The class is taught by Juan Nunez, FRC’s head athletic trainer. Nunez brings his years of experience playing and coaching to the class.

The class is a seven-week program, currently entering its third week. Though two classes are finished, it is not too late to sign up.

The next class is Sunday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. This will be the last chance to enroll. Classes will be held at 3 p.m. on following Sundays.

One aspect of the course that is unique to Plumas County is the youth aspect of it. The first hour of each class is dedicated to students between 6 and 12 years old. The hour includes 20 minutes of shooting drills and 40 minutes of play.

“My hope is to have enough interested to sanction the teams more so according to age,” said Nunez. “I’m trying to get youth more active. Especially now that there isn’t much going on, it’s good to have something for them to do.”

Nunez’s belief is that the younger players are when they learn the fundamentals of soccer, the better chances they have at playing at a college level.

“My goal is to get players playing while they’re still young,” elaborated Nunez. “If they want to, they can definitely get to a college level.”

The following two hours are dedicated to teens and adults. A group of adults has been informally getting together on Sundays for years now. The class opens up the games to the public. Anyone can join in.

“Eventually I would like to take a group of students to some tournaments held in Reno,” said Nunez. “If there is enough interest there are plenty of one-day tournaments we can go to that will even further skill sets.”

The cost of the course is $35 for students and $50 for adults. Those interested can attend this Sunday’s class at no charge before fully signing up or contact Nunez at jnunez@frc.edu or 283-0202, ext. 330.
