Eureka Peak looms large

Eureka Peak looms stark and jagged above Eureka Lake near Johnsville on a windy and stormy Jan. 26. The lake and the peak are popular destinations year-round for hikers and skiers. Plumas-Eureka State Park, established in 1959, was saved from the chopping block and has gone through some upgrades and renovations, including a groomed cross-country ski trail that leaves from the museum parking lot. The park provides a fascinating glimpse into gold rush-era days, and because of a donor agreement with Plumas-Eureka State Park Association, the campground will reopen May 24.
