The murder of five people in Fernley and Mustang Nevada Monday, May 13 touches Lassen County.

Two of the victims are former Lassen County residents — Les Leiber, 69, the former general manager of the Lassen Municipal Utility District and Angie Duff, 67. Also killed were Robert Pape 84, his wife Dorothy Pape, 84, and Eliazar Graham, 52.

Jeremiah Bean, 25, is in custody and could face charges including open murder with a deadly weapon, arson, burglary, robbery, ex-felon in possession with a firearm, and grand larceny.

Television station Channel 2 in Reno reports Allen Veil said all five victims died from gunshot wounds at a press conference Wednesday, May 15.

"The horror and the unplanned loss of loved ones to a senseless crime, and that's the only way I can describe it is senseless, taking the lives of five people for a motive that's yet to determined,” Veil said.

LMUD Office Manager Keri Richards said employees had been talking with members of Leiber’s family, and the district’s employees are shocked and saddened by the news.

“It’s been a really tough week,” Richards said. “It is our Les.”

Leiber worked his way up through a variety of positions during nearly 25 years with Pacific Gas and Electric before coming to LMUD in 1991. He also worked as a consultant for LMUD, the Plumas-Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative, and other utility districts in California since leaving LMUD in 1997.

Leiber was hired as interim general manager on Jan. 1, 2001, until the publicly owned utility district hired Evelene Twitchell as general manager Feb. 1, 2003.

Leiber again took the top job Jan. 30, 2005 after Twitchell resigned to get married and move to Nevada, but he didn’t stay long, leaving that position in May.

Former Lake Forest resident Marion Prine, said, “The Duffs lived across from us in Lake Forest when we moved there in 1988.  She was a very kind person.   I can't believe it.”

According to the Senior Center News, Duff was named Volunteer of the Month in December 2011. She had been a volunteer at the Lassen County Senior Center since 2003, working mainly in the thrift shop.

Before her retirement, Duff worked for Verizon for 30 years.

According to a press release from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, “The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, the Lyon County District Attorney, Nevada State Fire Marshall and North Lyon County Fire Department are continuing the ongoing investigation into the deaths of five persons on or about May 13, 2013 in Fernley and near the Mustang exit on I-80 exit in Washoe County.”
