It’s that time again for fishers to pull out their rods and reels and head to Lake Davis. The annual Lake Davis Spring Fishing Derby is set to take place June 15. The derby starts at 6 a.m. and lasts until 5 that afternoon.
The derby was hosted by the Portola Rotary Club in the past, but the Graeagle Plumas Alliance will hold the event this year. Rotary held the annual event for more than 10 years.
The alliance plans to donate proceeds from the event to the Eastern Plumas Rural Fire Protection District for water rescue equipment. The cost to enter the derby is $20 per person if registered before June 15, and $25 to register the day of the derby.
Pre-registration is available until noon on June 14 at K&S Market, Leonard’s Market, Firehouse Thrift, Valu-Wide Discount and the Graeagle Frostee. Registration is available through the day of the event at J&J Grizzly Store.
The top three anglers with the biggest fish will receive prizes, and a booby prize will be given to whoever catches the smallest fish. A drawing will take place on site as well.
The Portola Fire Department will be on hand grilling up hot dogs and hamburgers, which will all be for sale.
Jeanne Graham with the Graeagle-Plumas Alliance mentioned that next year’s derby will carry on through the whole weekend in order to attract more visitors to Eastern Plumas County. The hope is to fill the area’s motels and resorts.
Participants will meet at J&J Grizzly Store to register and sign in. Those interested in pre-registering or in more information are invited to contact Graham at 832-0270.
