The Pioneer Pool in Quincy was transformed last weekend to host the annual Quincy Invitational swim meet. The meet was the hottest event for the Plumas Swim Team this summer along with its biggest fundraiser.

Sixteen teams accepted Plumas Swim Team’s invitation and showed up to compete. The teams came from all over northern California and Nevada, totaling 286 swimmers. The event, open to anyone, even attracted swimmers from Oregon.

The swimming extravaganza brought close to 1,000 people in all, including parents, coaches and spectators. Around 70 local volunteers timed heats, acted as lifeguards, ran concessions and helped organize.

The Plumas Swim Team showed off its hometown confidence with the words “Eat my Bubbles” written on its members’ backs. The Plumas Swim Team, made up of Quincy, Indian Valley and Eastern Plumas County athletes, is open to swimmers age 3 – 18 of all levels and abilities.

“It’s good for the kids,” commented meet director Aimee Heaney. “Our swimmers get four to seven workouts each week. And I feel like we have an advantage at this meet, because we’re used to the higher elevation.”

Of the 16 teams that competed, Plumas Swim Team placed second overall. Three members of the team shone especially bright. Liam Parrot, Savannah Little and Bobby Barnes all took first in gold flight events.

On Saturday, Parrott placed first in the 9 – 10 boys’ 50-yard breaststroke. Little took the gold in the 7 – 8 girls’ 100-yard freestyle. Barnes placed first in the 6-and-under boys’ 25-yard backstroke.

Money raised at the meet will go a long way for the team. In addition to paying for next year’s meet, the funds will help with traveling costs and scholarships.
