Sirens blared through Quincy last night as law enforcement and first responders raced to the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds in response to a pickup truck crash at the American Valley Speedway.

According to the CHP report, driver Danny Leonhardt, 70, was driving his 2006 Dodge Ram in a clockwise direction on the race track at a high rate of speed.

The CHP said witnesses reported he may have been involved in a speed contest with a second pickup.

Leonhardt’s pickup “struck multiple concrete barriers, chain link fencing, and a three phase light pole.”

He was reported to be under the influence of alcohol and not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, approximately 9:11 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15.

Leonhardt suffered major injuries. He was arrested and released to Plumas District Hospital. Leonhardt was transported to Enloe Medical Center where he remains in the trauma unit as of 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16.

A representative from American Valley Speedway confirmed that the much anticipated Go Kart, DART Dwarfs and IMCA Modified races to be held Sunday, Aug. 18, will continue as planned.
