Bailey Creek Women’s Club

It seems that we mountain golfers try to get as much in as possible before the snow flies. That surely is the case with the Bailey Creek Women’s Club during the first half of August.

On Aug. 7, the group had a great turnout for a low gross/low net game.

In the first flight, Donna White had the low gross score, with Wynnetta Regli winning the low net competition.

In the second flight, Jenni Cesarin won low gross and Doris Prince won low net.

There were three “Chip-Ins” made by Cheryl Erwin, Jan Vortman and Jenni Cesarin. Cheryl also had a “Birdie” on hole No. 7. A luncheon meeting followed play.

The club has had a few Sunday play days in hopes of seeing some of the ladies that are in the area primarily on weekends.

On Sunday, Aug. 11, the group played a game of “Mutt and Jeff.” Cheryl Erwin placed first and Jan Vortman came in second in the first flight. Placing first and second respectively in the second flight were Ginger Birchfield and Jenni Cesarin.

The most recent playday was Wed., Aug. 14. In a “Point Par” format, Lynn Bottini took home the sweeps in the first flight, with Ginger Birchfield taking first in the second flight. Lynn had a Birdie and Ginger had not one, but two, “Chip-Ins.”

As if that was not enough, several of the ladies played the “Italia” themed tournament at Lake Almanor West the following Thursday. It was a fantastic day, thanks to those LAW ladies, the LAW staff and volunteers.

Bailey Creek Ladies host a guest day on the third Wednesday of each month. If you would like to join us as a guest let any of the Bailey Creek Women’s Club members know.

Graeagle Meadows Women’s Club Championship

The Graeagle Meadows Women’s Golf Club held its three-round Club Championship on Aug. 8, 13 and 15. Players were challenged during rounds two and three by very smoky air due to forest fires elsewhere in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

  And the winners were:

The overall low gross player and new club champion was Cheryl Brennan with a score of 291; the overall low gross runner-up (and first flight low gross winner) was Bev Reynolds with a score of 294.

Only those playing from the red tees were eligible to win overall low gross club champion.

After the final round, the weary and hungry golfers enjoyed a hearty luncheon at the Graeagle Meadows Golf Course Restaurant. Thanks to Jamie and her staff for a job well done.

In addition, there were two red tee division flights, and one combo tee division flight. About one-third of the field finished “in the money.”

In the red tee division, the first flight winners were: first low net, Gail Nelson; second low net, a tie between Janice McCreary and Debbie Peterson. Second flight winners were: low gross, Ellen Fearing; first low net, Dee Walker; second low net was a tie between Lois Childress and Donna Swanson.

In the combo tee division, the winners were: low gross, Lorraine Cornish; first low net, Giuliana Glazer; second low net, Linda Bilger.

The Plumas Pines golf professionals, golf shop staff, golf course superintendent and crew, Longboard’s Restaurant staff and many volunteers from the Plumas Pines Women’s and Men’s Clubs all collaborated to provide great golf, excellent breakfast and lunch each day, wonderful prizes and unmatched entertainment. Awards were given for closest to the pin, longest drive, most accurate drive, best dressed foursome and horse race.

Whitehawk Ranch Ladies Golf Club

Aug. 13, 2013

It was a beautiful crisp morning for our ladies golf though smoke brought some haze to the usually pristine skies. But it did not affect the clear focus for trying to help a team score in the format called One, Two, Three. Each player played her own ball for individual scores but for the game score one best net ball was used on the par 5’s, two best net balls on the par 4’s, and 3 best net balls on the par 3’s.

The first place net team was JoAnn West, Laurie McKenzie, Ann Verutti, and Lynn Smith. The second place net team was Barbara Competello, Toni Dick, Chris Hyatt, and Janice Jobe. Chris Hyatt had a fortunate Chip –in on No. 9!

Graeagle Meadows Men’s Wednesday Play Day

Graeagle Meadows Golf Course (GMGA) has become Hole-in-One Central. Bill Smidt made the eighth hole-in-one scored by a member of the Men’s and Women’s Club at GMGA this season. Congratulations to Bill. Most of our members have played for years and never scored a hole-in-on.

The Game of the Day was best two balls of the foursome. As usual, the field was divided into two flights: the white tee flight and the combo tee flight.

In deference to Bill’s accomplishment we will start with the combo tee flight, which is the flight that Bill plays in. The winning foursome was made up of John Grasso, Tom Fregulia, Bob McIlroy and Jim Brennan, with a score of 110. The second place team was made up of Tom Gossett, Jim Oster, Bob Nunn and Dennis Flynn with a score of 117. One skin was won by Tom Fregulia, Duane Austin, and Dennis Chegwin. Bill “Hole-in-One” Smidt scored two skins.

In the white tee flight, first place was won by the team of Joel Patterson, Dick Eck, Bryan Hansen and Gary Kinkley, with a score of 116. Second place was won by Jim Adams, Jack Gilbert, George Fraser and Bob Morales, with a score of 129. Two skins each were won by Joel Patterson and Jim Adams. One skin was won by Mike Hallenberger, Ken Hattich, Jack Heskett and Bryan Hansen.

There will not be a Wednesday play day the next two weeks. On Aug. 21, the Guys & Gals Couples Club Championship will be held. Aug. 28, the Golden Tomahawk, the first day of the home and home with Plumas Pines, will be held.

LAWWGC

Thursday, Aug. 15, was a perfect day for the West Shore ladies’ club to hold a tournament. The weather was beautiful for the 56 ladies who enjoyed the game format of Cha Cha Cha. The golf course was a riot of red, green and white, the colors of the Italian flag, worn by the participants in honor of the tournament theme, Italia.

Decorations for the luncheon were carried out in these colors by Karen DeMoe and her committee.

The first place winners for the A flight were Julie Azevedo, Pat Fricke, Lee Hunter and Mary Williams. Second place was taken by Linda Boone, June Park, Jakki Thomas and Yasuko Zingg. Third place winners were Mary Ashburn, Jenni Cesarin, Donna White and Jan Vortmann.

B flight first place winners were Sharon Auge, Arlene Cary, Adrienne Fagalde and Pam Joseph. Taking second place were Joyce Gronroos, Joann Miller, Diana Pallari and Carolyn Wilhoit. Third place was captured by Pat Drake, Barbara Leonard, Coleen Prentke and Betsy Steen.

Club member, Sally Weller, and guest, Judy Crain, won the accuracy contest. Long drive by players’ handicaps were: Hcp 0-27 Linda Johnson, Hcp 28-32 Jane Hilliard, Hcp 33+ Pam Joseph.   Each participating golfer received a lovely gift of gaily-wrapped Italian goodies put together by Kathi Shennan. A huge basket brimming with Italian foods, wines and more was the door prize made by Judy Cooper and won by one lucky lady.

A big thank-you goes to John Joseph, pro shop manager and instructor, for all his help and for donating and obtaining raffle prizes. Also, thanks to the pro shop staff crew, Melissa Smith, Jacob, Josh and Moses for their part in our successful tournament.

The Almanor West Grill provided a delicious breakfast and an Italian themed lunch of lasagna and all the trimmings. Many thanks to the Grill staff for all they did.

The biggest thank you goes to Sharon Auge, tournament chairman, for all her hard work and a job well done.
