Chesters Topher Taylor nails another three pointer

With a 79-56 win over Quincy last Friday night, the Chester High School boys' basketball team improved its league record to 5-0.

The Chester Volcanoes jumped out to an 8-1 lead early in the contest, but then Quincy went on an 11-0 run to take a four-point lead. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied at 19.

The teams played evenly early in the second quarter, but then a couple 3-pointers by Chester's Topher Taylor (Pictured right) broke Quincy's spirit. The Volcanoes outscored the Trojans 24-10 through the second period.

The first half ended with a spectacular buzzer-beater by Chester's Tyler Hernandez, who took the shot from near the sideline at half-court. After rattling hard against the glass and rim, it fell through the net, giving Chester a 43-29 lead at halftime.

The Volcanoes dominated the third quarter by outscoring Quincy 17-6, but the Trojans never gave up and outplayed Chester 21-19 in the final period.

The many Chester fans in attendance provided boisterous support for their team, and they were thrilled when Alex Omnerik came off the bench and scored a basket in the last minute of the game.

Four Chester players scored in double digits. Cole Fanning totaled 19 points, followed by Chad Durkin with 16, Taylor with 14 and Hernandez with 10.

Durkin pulled down 11 rebounds for Chester, and David Ryn captured nine rebounds and eight points.

Taylor led with nine assists and three steals.

For Quincy, Cody Cline played his heart out and finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds.

Devonte Smith totaled nine points, while Keshawn Johnson and Keefer Hokanson scored seven apiece.

Andrew Murphy delivered five assists. Johnson claimed four assists and four steals.
