The Feather River College softball team traveled south to Stockton Saturday, March 6, to get back to action after a 15-day layoff.
The Golden Eagles knocked off the rust against Contra Costa behind a strong pitching performance by Annalee Rubio. Rubio surrendered only five hits while striking out five in route to her second shutout of the season.
The offense, led by Dani Ming's three hits, would finally get going in the fifth inning, scoring three times behind RBI doubles by Brittany Potter and Chelsea Venable. FRC added one more run in the sixth inning to finish the scoring for the game. The Golden Eagles went on to win the game 4-0, pushing their record to 10-2.Game two matched up FRC, the second-ranked team in the North, with the fourth-ranked team in the state, San Joaquin Delta College.
The Golden Eagles got on the board first with an RBI double by Brittany Potter, scoring Dani Ming from first base.
Feather River held the lead going into the fifth inning behind an impressive pitching performance by Erica Wieck. Wieck went the distance, giving up only four hits and no earned runs.
The Eagles’ defense was the difference. A one-out error in right field set the table for the Mustangs to tie the game in the fifth inning. Wieck did a great job of getting out of the jam in the fifth to leave the game tied 1-1.
In the sixth inning, the Golden Eagles once again made a one-out mistake to give the Mustangs the 2-1 lead, which ended up being the final score.
“When playing against teams of Delta's caliber, it is the team with the least amount of mistakes that usually wins,” said FRC coach Josh Taylor.
That statement held true, as the Golden
Eagles had the tying run on third in the seventh inning, but could not get her in to score.
The loss pushed the Golden Eagles’ record to 10-3. Feather River will begin Golden Valley Conference play Wednesday, March 10, at Lassen College.
