Jessica Bauer, a 2005 Portola High School graduate, was on her way to work as an EMT with REMSA in Reno, Nev., when she saw a glow in the distance. It was 4 a.m., April 23.
The man was also on fire, so Bauer took off the jacket and used it to smother the flames. She called for assistance and waited until he was cared for.
The fire victim is now at the burn unit at U.C.–Davis, but has a fighting chance for survival because of Bauer’s quick actions and fortuitous arrival.
Bauer reported her actions were automatic because of her training.
She was early for work that day and told KOLO TV news, “I think it was kind of meant to be.”
The man’s girlfriend agreed, posting a note to the Internet report, “Thank you, God, for placing this woman in the right place at the right time. I truly believe this blessing was meant to be.”
Jessica is the daughter of Karen Bauer of Portola who is manager at Leonard’s Market. At Portola High School, Jessica was active in drama, concert band and show choir and was instrumental in getting her mother involved.
Karen Bauer continues to volunteer her time as choreographer for the show choir eight years later.
