CalTrans comes to Greenville

Those interested in the future of the highway through Greenville are encouraged to attend a public open house Thursday, June 10, 2010.

On display, from 4-6 p.m., will be plans for a $4.5 million project to improve many facets of the Highway 89 corridor through town, including drainage, sidewalks and handicap access.

A flyer advertising the open house said the drainage improvements are needed because of a lack of curb and gutter along much of the project area.

There are also several roads deemed to intersect the highway at undesirable angles.

The project goals of improved vehicle and pedestrian safety include plans for things like bulb-outs to slow traffic through town, continuous sidewalks, crosswalks and upgrades of drainage and handicap access to current standards.

There are also alternative plans that include the construction of decorative landscaping and lighting.

The funding source for the improvements along the highway will be from the State Transportation Improvement Plan.

And if funds are available when the time comes, plans are to achieve environmental requirements by October 2010; complete design work and right of way certification by May 2014; and finish the project by fall of 2016.

This timeline can be accelerated if funds are available, and the improvements may be phased based on available funds.
