Two up and one down for city hall

11/3/2010

Tuesday’s election filled two seats on Portola’s City Council — just in time for the resignation of still another councilmember. Bill Kennedy will resign as of Nov. 11.

In his letter to the council, Kennedy said, “I have very much enjoyed the privilege of serving on the Portola City Council.”

Kennedy and his wife, Helen, the former curator at the Williams House Museum, are moving to McMinnville, Ore., to be closer to their children.

Kennedy was first appointed to the council in February 1997 and served until December 2002.

He lost an election, then regained the seat in the 2004 election and served until the current time. He was mayor in 2006.

The matter of the vacant seat will be on the Nov. 10 agenda. The city attorney will explain the two options available to the council: special election or city council appointment of a new council member.

If the second option is selected by a majority of the council, members will have 30 days from the date of Kennedy’s resignation to appoint a replacement
