Local skiers compete at Tahoe

The Quincy and Portola High School ski teams had their first race of the season Monday, Jan. 3, when they competed in Giant Slalom at Northstar.

In the men's division, more than 50 skiers raced. Quincy and Portola earned five of the top 15 positions.

Garrett Hagwood was the fastest local racer of the day, taking sixth place overall for Quincy with a combined time of 2 minutes, 11.27 seconds.

Portola's Tyler Atkins was next, clocking a combined time of 2:13.12 for eighth place.


Quincy's Henry Dillingham and Koby Barker took 10th and 11th, respectively, with exactly 1.5 seconds separating their combined times. Dillingham came in at 2:14.31 and Barker finished at 2:15.81.

Luis Rubalcava-Cunan followed, registering a 2:18.14 to secure the 15th position for the Quincy Trojans.

Additional local racers included Quincy's Daniel Haygood in 28th place at 2:31.66, Portola's Tyler Stockdale in 30th at 2:32.88 and Quincy's Dante Knowles in 32nd at 2:34.08.

Quincy's Danny Ryback and Brian Wood each put two runs together to finish 39th and 41st, respectively.

In the women's division, Quincy had three racers compete in a field of 38.

Alexis DeCoe placed ninth overall with a combined time of 2:17.85. Mariah Hopkins took 26th at 2:35.90, and Alienor Delany finished 32nd at 2:50.79.

The Quincy and Portola ski teams competed at Alpine Meadows last Monday, Jan. 10, in their first slalom race of the season. See next week's newspaper for photos and results.
