DA's murder complaint details officer's death

Tuesday, Jan. 11 - On Monday, Jan. 10, Lassen County District Attorney Bob Burns filed two complaints of premeditated murder and conspiracyagainst Robin James Glen and Joanna(Beckett) McElrath in the Lassen County Superior Court. The complaint also outlines how the alleged murder of Susanville Police Officer Robert McElrath took place.

According to the complaint, on or about Saturday, Jan. 1, James, 46, provided Joanna McElrath, 36, with prescription narcotic medications that were intended to be given to the victim without his knowledge.

McElrath allegedlyground up the narcotic medications and put them in Robert McElrath’s alcoholic drink without his knowledge and then later she gave him more prescription narcotic medicationstelling him it was aspirin.

Once the victim was incoherent, the complaint said hewas driven to Devil’s Corral in his own vehicle and was walked out onto the old vehicular bridge and then shot once in the face at point blank range with his own duty weapon.

According to the court documents, the victim was left for dead and the defendants left the scene. They returned some period time later and dropped the body off the bridge onto the riverbank below.

During a Monday, Jan. 10 arraignment, McElrath and James pleaded not guilty to charges of premeditated murder and conspiracy and special allegations that the murder was committed for the purpose of financial gain, lying in wait and that James allegedly used the handgun during the felony and that action resulted in McElrath’s death.

The victim’s body was found the morning of Sunday, Jan. 2 and after an investigation by several law enforcementagencies, McElrath and James, were arrested Thursday, Jan. 6
