Animal acupressure certified
Susan Holmes passed the National Board of Certification for Animal Acupressure and Massage (NBCAAM) and is now a nationally certified equine acupressure practitioner. She is one of the few in the nation to achieve this distinction. NBCAAM was founded by a group of professional practitioners, instructors, and veterinarians working in the fields of animal massage and acupressure. Collectively, they developed a set of “core competencies” for each discipline that is designed to reflect the knowledge required to perform these two practices on animals. Susan said taking the exam is entirely voluntary for animal practitioners who are serious about enhancing the professional standing of animal massage and acupressure in the United States. Dee Dee and Don Drisco ventured to Salt Lake City recently to attend the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Expo at the convention center. Dee Dee said the show, billed as North America’s largest indoor-outdoor living showcase, was fantastic and the two are thrilled with the many new items they purchased for their East Quincy store, Quincy Hot Spot. Topping her list are the reasonably priced tabletop fire pits from Outdoor Rooms that feature a soothing and warm venturi flame. She has also brought in a new line of candles from McCall’s that “have a really good smell and my customers are raving about them!” Here’s yet another store that more than deserves a visit if you haven’t dropped in yet!

Two Graeagle businesses are reopening for the season:
Cuccia’s Restaurant, at the corner of Mohawk Hwy. and Johnsville Road, owned by Terry Moore, Gina Prince and Lila Prince, is opening March 31. The pizza, pasta and wine bar is known for its classic Italian cuisine.
Graeagle Mill Works will reopen April 1 after a brief winter break. It’s Tim and Cathy Kurdupski’s 19th season. They’re open daily from 10 a.m. — 5 p.m. with a delightful array of sandwiches, homemade soups, deserts, gourmet coffee and more.

Now under renovation until reopening April 14 is The Lodge at Nakoma Resort at Gold Mountain. We’re told the kitchen at the restaurant is being completely redone — and in time for the new season!
“biggest loser” pet challenge
Dr. Doyle Rolston of Indian Creek Veterinary Clinic is kicking off “The Biggest Loser Challenge” for overweight and obese dogs. Signups for this 18-week challenge begin on April 1. Sure, it’s spring. And, yes, there is some 20-plus feet of snow at Bucks Lake. But that hasn’t kept DeWitt and Kim Henderson from keeping Lakeshore Resort and its cabin rentals open all winter. They serve lunch and dinner Thursday — Sunday, while keeping the bar and store are open throughout the day. This marks the couple’s 20th anniversary operating Bucks Lake Marina, where they rent boats, wave runners and boat slips. Plans are to have the Marina open May 1 for the season. Bob and Cheryl Reinitz celebrate 15 years as the hardworking proprietors of Forest Stationers in downtown Quincy. The store has really changed over the years and the name clearly doesn’t fully reflect the product offerings. Besides a office supply and equipment store and licensed Xerox dealer for copiers and home and office printers, it is a cleverly stocked gift store. They carry such a variety, I have absolutely no doubt you would be able to find that perfect gift for that special occasion.
It’s the first anniversary for Michael and Karen Kibble as owners of Portola Village Pharmacy on Commercial Street. Karen said this past year they really listened to their customers and the variety of merchandise they now carry is a direct reflection of what they have learned. Whether you’re shopping their diverse product mixture or picking up a prescription, don’t pass on their old fashioned soda fountain, where Jess is known to make some of the best sandwiches, soups and homemade milkshakes.
Another first year anniversary to note: That’s when Sierra Energy took over Dollards Sierra Stop in Portola. Jacquie Osbourn, currently the assistant manager, said with some recent management changes they have been busy lowering prices throughout the store in virtually every department, including the deli and fast food section, dairy products, beer and soda, and even cigarettes. They have also reinstituted two popular contests: A monthly contest for the biggest fish wins a fishing pole and a big buck contest for hunters culminates in a season-ending rifle giveaway. The team of professionals at Neff Automotive in Crescent Mills has been expertly serving the area’s automotive repair needs for six years. They work on most cars and trucks, foreign and domestic.

Plumas District Hospital Volunteers are celebrating their 33rd anniversary this month. The anchor to their philanthropic endeavors is the Bargain Boutique at Lawrence and Church streets in Quincy. Proceeds from this thrift shop benefit the hospital, supplying equipment for patient care the hospital could not normally afford or perhaps justify in their operating budget. The Volunteers also award scholarships annually to medical students from the hospital district.
Birth Partners is celebrating its sixth year of providing pregnancy mentoring services to families in Plumas and Lassen counties.
