During an otherwise unremarkable fair board meeting Wednesday, March 30, fair manager John Steffanic briefed directors on the status of opening negotiations between Plumas-Sierra County Fair and the Nevada State Fair.
The Nevada fair’s board voted Tuesday, March 8, to cancel the 2011 state fair, breaking a continuous 136-year run. According to the Reno Gazette Journal and the fair’s own website, the fair has only raised 13 percent of the needed revenue to produce the 2011 fair.
On hearing that news, Steffanic contacted the Nevada directors and raised the possibility of the Plumas-Sierra County Fair hosting Nevada’s fair in August. As of press time, the Nevada board’s decision is unknown.
Plumas-Sierra directors quizzed Steffanic on the logistics of such a combination. Steffanic said Nevada would maintain separate still exhibits and entries and that it seemed likely that Nevada livestock projects would still be held in Nevada. He added that a number of issues would need to be addressed.
Steffanic stressed to his directors that everything was in the exploratory stage, to be considered formally when and if Nevada decides to accept Steffanic’s offer.
In addition to helping a longstanding Nevada tradition, the idea has positive ramifications for the county fair. At the very least, fair-going northern Nevadans could swell the gate receipts and boost fair income overall.
In addition, the Nevada State Fair would shoulder a proportionate share of the expenses, such as advertising.
Steffanic tentatively expected an answer Friday, April 1. If Nevada accepted the offer, Steffanic would place the matter on a future agenda for discussion.
