Water quality notice

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER

April 2011

The Plumas Eureka Community Services District Domestic Water System Has Levels of Arsenic Above the Federal Drinking Water Standard

Our domestic water system recently violated the new federal drinking water standard for arsenic. Although this is not an emergency, you have the right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.

What happened?

The USEPA standard, enacted in January 2006, lowered the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of arsenic from 0.050 milligrams per liter (mg/l) to 0.010 mg/l. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants throughout the year. Our results indicate the 2011 first quarter average (Jan, Feb, Mar) for Well #2 is 0.0107 mg/L which is above the current federal standard.

What should I do?

You do not need to use an alternative water supply (e.g., bottled water).

This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing arsenic in excess of the MCL over many years may experience skin damage or circulatory system problems, and may have an increased risk to getting cancer.

If you have other health issues concerning the consumption of this water, you may wish to consult your doctor.

What is being done?

PECSD is continuing to work with Plumas GeoHydrology in sampling the surrounding groundwater. The testing results have identified two possible places where lower aresenic levels may be found in the groundwater. We will be drilling two test wells within PECSD's boundaries sometime in late spring or early summer to determine if these locations prove to be acceptable drinking water sources.
