Chester man arrested for luring Susanville child via text messages
After a month-long investigation, the Susanville Police Department (SPD) with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested 32-year-old Chester resident Larry Ronald Gorbet Jr. Oct. 20.
Gorbet was arrested at a residence in Susanville for allegedly communicating with a minor with the intent to commit a sexual act, and attempting to meet with a minor with the intent to commit a sexual act.
The investigation started about one month earlier when SPD learned Gorbet had been sending text messages to a 13-year-old Susanville girl.
It appeared that through text message conversations Gorbet was attempting to arrange a meeting with the girl for sexual purposes.
Through the investigation, SPD and the FBI determined Gorbet would be traveling to Susanville to meet with the girl. When Gorbet arrived at the girl’s home in Susanville, he was arrested and taken into custody without incident. SPD and the FBI worked closely with the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office on the arrest.
Gorbet was booked into the Lassen County Adult Detention Facility on the above charges, and is being held on $50,000 bail.
Gorbet is currently being held on state charges. The case will be reviewed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for possible federal charges sometime next week.
“This case is an example of the dangers our children face from predators,” said Susanville Police Chief Jeff Atkinson. “Parents should be vigilant in teaching their children about some of the dangers associated with social media and speak with them about what is and is not acceptable behavior. This was very good work on the part of our detective that handled the investigation and we appreciate the assistance of the FBI, who are always willing to do whatever they can to assist us when called upon.
