The Chester High School wrestling team took fifth place out of 21 schools at the 40th annual Chester wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 – 3.
Chico High School won the tournament, followed by Fernley High School in second place and Lassen High School in third.
Chester’s Westley Ruffer, competing at 195 pounds, was named the outstanding upper weight wrestler.
In the championship match, Ruffer defeated Lovelock’s two-time Nevada state champion by a score of 10-2.
On his way to the finals, Ruffer also beat a Chico wrestler who was ranked No. 1 in Northern Section.
John Leal, a 145-pound freshman, also earned first place for the Chester Volcanoes in his first high school tournament. Leal easily won in the finals by 15 points.
Chester’s Clay Buchanan placed second overall after losing 3-1 in the finals to a Chico wrestler who is ranked top in Northern Section.
Rocklin Loranger secured a third place for Chester in the 152-pound weight class. Loranger’s only loss came against another No. 1 ranked wrestler from Chico.
This weekend, the Chester Volcanoes will travel to Modoc High School in Alturas to compete in the Northeast Classic, which features teams from Northern California and Oregon.
