At approximately 5:47 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, emergency crews responded to a single vehicle accident on Highway 147 that claimed the life of a Westwood man.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 54-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, was traveling southbound on Highway 147 near the Hamilton Branch over crossing in his 1995 Honda Civic.

The driver had just passed a vehicle in excess of the 55-mile-per hour speed limit.

As the man began to negotiate the approaching curve to the left he lost control of the vehicle and began an out of control counter clockwise spin and crossed the opposing lane.

The vehicle traveled up the embankment colliding with a large rock.

The vehicle then overturned and ejected the man, who CHP says was not wearing his seatbelt.

Both the victim and the car landed in the roadway.
