Volcanoes top Lumberjacks

The Chester High School boys’ basketball team traveled to Westwood Wednesday, Feb. 8, and posted a 67-56 win over the Lumberjacks.

Westwood led 19-18 at the end of the first quarter, but then the Volcanoes outscored the Lumberjacks 13-6 in the second quarter to take a 31-25 lead at halftime.

Chester scored more than twice as often as Westwood through the third quarter as well, when the Volcanoes outplayed the Lumberjacks 21-10.

Westwood worked hard to get back into the game in the final period by outscoring Chester 21-15, but the Volcanoes easily preserved the 11-point win.

Topher Taylor scored 27 points for the Volcanoes, including four three-pointers. Taylor also led with eight assists and three steals.

Micah Bondon added 12 points for Chester, Jacob Angelis earned nine points and Harry LeSeur finished with eight points.

For Westwood, Eddie Acuna led with 15 points, followed by Christian Hulsey with 13 and Thomas Kelly with 11.

The Volcanoes out-rebounded the Lumberjacks 58 to 30. Wyatt Durkin and Angelis each grabbed 12 boards for Chester, followed by Bondon with 10 and Hunter Morris with seven.

From the free-throw line, Chester made 22 of 30.

The game improved Chester’s overall record to 17-5 and was just the second loss of the season for Westwood.
