75 YEARS AGO.............1937

Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the large barn on the Hosselkus Ranch in Genesee Saturday night. It is thought that one of the wires short circuited and caused an explosion. Uninsured, the barn stored two trucks, a hay rack, mower and two cars owned by Frank and John Hosselkus.

Funeral services were held in Oroville yesterday for Myron L. Openshaw, Plumas rancher and business owner, who was killed when his horse fell backward killing him at his Crescent Mills ranch Sunday. Mr. Openshaw was a partner with his brother Smith Openshaw and C.T. Bedell in the Plumas Meat Market in Quincy.

50 YEARS AGO.........1962

The attendance at the Plumas County Fair in Quincy was up this year by 1,569, with a total of 28,946 attending the five day event. Highlight of the exposition was the visit of California Governor Edmund Brown on Saturday afternoon and night who flew into Quincy. Attending a reception hosted by the Appaloosa Horse Club, he then toured the fairgrounds and he was an honorary judge at the Logger’s Show Saturday night.

The preliminary budget of Plumas County for the 1962 fiscal year, as set by the Plumas County Board of Supervisors, is $2,484,245 as compared to $3,258,586 last year.

25 YEARS AGO.............1987

Sacramento television newsman Mike Boyd was the grand marshall of the Portola Railroad Days last weekend.

The Plumas County Board of Supervisors ended a long week of hearings by adopting a final $24.9 million budget for the fiscal year 1988. The bottom line is $2 million more than last year’s total and pays five additional Plumas County employees.

10 YEARS AGO.......2002

A $15 million bond issue measure for Plumas Unified School District will be on the November ballot. The measure, if passed, will be used to improve district facilities, many of which are over 30 years old and one that is almost 100 years old.
